Thanks a lot to artist Kim Bagwell, for featuring the store on her blog: http://kimbagwill.blogspot.com/2009/02/regeneration-in-new-york-times.html
Her fantasticly funny cards have been such a hit at the store. Here's her "Where's my eggs?" Easter card:

any press is good press?

The good news is that the store was featured in the New York Times style section last week! The bad news is that it took a pretty negative spin on the neighborhood of Eagle Rock and the slumping economy.
My quote: "Kelly Witmer, the owner of Regeneration, a retro-design shop that opened in 2006, looks exhausted by the drop in business. She recently rented out half her space to keep afloat. “It seems a little slow in Eagle Rock right now, in spite of people saying it’s the next big thing, or the new Silver Lake,” she said. “At least on my side of the street, there’s not a lot of foot traffic.”"
The writer left out the positive things I said, such as how I'm trying to roll with the punches by taking on a partner and trying new things. The photographer spent a lot of time taking tons of photos, but instead of the cheerful ones, like me talking to a neighbor while our dogs played in front of the store, they used an out-take where I'm making an awful face and do indeed look "exhausted".
The media seems to love spinning these tales of doom and gloom lately, and it's frustrating. I'm told that in other countries, the media has been very positive to keep spirits up and avoid drastic drops in spending. You have to wonder how much of a recession has to do with the state of the public's mind.
But I shouldn't complain - there's no such thing as bed press, right?
